Bibimbap is a classic Korean dish that translates to "mixed rice." It’s a bowl of warm white rice topped with an assortment of vegetables, meat (usually beef), a fried egg, and gochujang (Korean chili paste). Here's how you can make it at home:

For the Rice:
- 2 cups of short-grain rice
For the Vegetables and Toppings:
- 1 cup julienned carrots
- 1 cup julienned zucchini
- 1 cup bean sprouts
- 1 cup spinach
- 1 cup shiitake mushrooms, sliced
- 1 cucumber, thinly sliced
- 1 cup kimchi (optional)
- 4 eggs
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- Salt to taste
For the Beef:
- 200 grams (about 7 ounces) beef sirloin, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds

Prepare the Rice:
- Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to the package instructions. Set aside and keep warm.
Prepare the Vegetables:
- Blanch the spinach in boiling water for about 1 minute, then drain and rinse with cold water. Squeeze out excess water and season with a little sesame oil and salt.
- Blanch the bean sprouts in boiling water for about 2 minutes, then drain and rinse with cold water. Season with a little sesame oil and salt.
- Sauté the carrots, zucchini, and mushrooms separately in a bit of oil until tender. Season with a pinch of salt.
Prepare the Beef:
- In a bowl, mix the soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, sugar, and black pepper. Add the beef slices and marinate for at least 15 minutes.
- Sauté the marinated beef in a hot pan until cooked through.
Prepare the Sauce:
- In a small bowl, mix together the gochujang, sesame oil, sugar, water, vinegar, and sesame seeds. Adjust the sweetness or spiciness to taste.
Fry the Eggs:
- Fry the eggs sunny-side-up in a non-stick pan with a bit of oil.
Assemble the Bibimbap:
- In individual serving bowls, place a portion of rice at the bottom.
- Arrange the vegetables, beef, and kimchi (if using) on top of the rice, each in their own section.
- Place a fried egg in the center.
- Drizzle with sesame oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Serve:
- Serve the bibimbap with the gochujang sauce on the side. To eat, mix everything together thoroughly and enjoy!
Tips:
- You can substitute or add any vegetables you like, such as bell peppers or daikon radish.
- For a vegetarian version, omit the beef and add more vegetables or tofu.
- Adjust the level of gochujang to suit your spice preference.
