Tea Kadai Onion Bonda is a popular South Indian snack that is commonly found in small tea shops or roadside stalls known as "tea kadais" in Tamil Nadu, India. It is a deep-fried fritter made with a batter of gram flour (besan) and onions, seasoned with spices. Here's a simple recipe to make Tea Kadai Onion Bonda:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup gram flour (besan)
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped
- A small piece of ginger, grated
- A few curry leaves, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- Water, as needed
- Oil for deep frying
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, add gram flour, chopped onions, green chilies, grated ginger, curry leaves, red chili powder (if using), turmeric powder, and salt. Mix everything well.
- Gradually add water to the mixture and whisk it to form a smooth and thick batter. The consistency should be such that it coats the onion and holds its shape when dropped.
- Heat oil in a deep frying pan or kadai over medium heat.
- Once the oil is hot, take small portions of the onion batter with your fingers or a spoon and drop them gently into the hot oil.
- Fry the bondas until they turn golden brown and crispy. Make sure to flip them occasionally for even frying.
- Once done, remove the bondas using a slotted spoon and place them on a kitchen towel to absorb any excess oil.
- Repeat the process with the remaining batter and onions until you have fried all the bondas.
- Tea Kadai Onion Bondas are ready to be served. They are typically enjoyed hot with a cup of tea or served as an evening snack.
Note: You can customize the recipe by adding other ingredients like chopped coriander leaves, fennel seeds, or grated coconut to enhance the flavor. Additionally, you can serve the bondas with coconut chutney or tomato ketchup for added taste.
