Sure! Here's a simple recipe for homemade apple cider:
Ingredients:
- 8-10 apples (a mix of sweet and tart varieties)
- 4 cups water
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (optional)
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 teaspoon whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries
- 1 orange, sliced (optional)
Instructions:
1. Start by washing the apples thoroughly to remove any dirt or wax. Cut them into quarters, removing the stems and seeds. You can leave the peels on as they will add flavor and color to the cider.
2. In a large pot, combine the apples, water, brown sugar (if using), cinnamon stick, cloves, allspice berries, and orange slices (if using).
3. Place the pot over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Once it boils, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for about 1-2 hours. Stir occasionally and use a spoon to mash the apples against the side of the pot to release their juices.
4. After simmering, remove the pot from heat and let it cool slightly. Use a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to strain the cider into another pot or large bowl. Press on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible.
5. At this point, you can taste the cider and adjust the sweetness by adding more sugar if desired. Return the strained cider to the stovetop and gently heat it until warm before serving.
6. Serve the apple cider warm in mugs or heat-resistant glasses. You can garnish each serving with a cinnamon stick or a slice of orange, if you like.
Note: Homemade apple cider can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can also freeze it in airtight containers for longer storage.
Enjoy your homemade apple cider!
