Rava Upma is a popular South Indian breakfast dish made with semolina (also known as rava or sooji), vegetables, and spices. Here's a recipe to make it:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup semolina (rava/sooji)
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 tablespoon chana dal (split Bengal gram)
- 1 tablespoon urad dal (split black gram)
- 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
- 2 green chilies, chopped
- 1/2 inch ginger, grated
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1/2 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas, etc.), chopped
- 2 cups water
- Salt to taste
- Coriander leaves for garnishing
Instructions:
Dry roast the semolina in a pan until it turns light brown in color. Keep it aside.
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds start to crackle, add cumin seeds, chana dal, and urad dal. Saute until the dals turn golden brown.
Add asafoetida, chopped green chilies, and grated ginger. Saute for a few seconds.
Add chopped onions and saute until they turn translucent.
Add chopped vegetables and saute for a minute.
Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste. Bring it to a boil.
Lower the heat and slowly add the roasted semolina while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
Cover the pan with a lid and let it cook on low heat for 5-7 minutes or until the water is absorbed and the rava is cooked.
Turn off the heat and let it rest for a few minutes.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with chutney or pickle.
Your delicious Rava Upma is now ready to be enjoyed as a healthy and filling breakfast or snack!
